What Is Crossfit?

CrossFit is the creation of Greg & Lauren Glassman and has proven itself time and time again to be the most effective conditioning system available today.
That however, doesn't say anything about what it actually is...
To look at what CrossFit actually is and what it entails, we need start by asking “what is fitness?”.
What Is Fitness?

There are ten physical skills that make up total fitness.
- Cardio-respiratory endurance
- Stamina
- Strength
- Power
- Flexibility
- Speed
- Coordination
- Agility
- Balance
- Accuracy
CrossFit states that you are only truly fit if you are competent in all ten of the above.
If you're a triathlete then chances are that your cardio-endurance and stamina are good, but you'll be lacking strength and power.
If you're a powerlifter, then you'll be strong and powerful, but probably lacking in the endurance stakes.
In the eyes of CrossFit, neither extreme can be called “fit”.
The amazing thing is, that all of the above skills can be developed to an amazingly high level before things can only be developed further by specialising in certain areas.
Crossfit delivers a fitness that is by design, broad, general, and inclusive.
Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
So, how is this voodoo achieved?
Training Methods

CrossFit uses functional movements from the worlds of Weightlifting, Gymnastics and Athletics. These movements are combined into high intensity workouts in order to maximise the body's response to exercise.
Go to almost any gym and you'll be given a program of 40mins on cardio machine, followed by some machine weight training and if you're lucky some curls and lateral raises.

The CrossFit method is scientifically proven to be more effective than this. The results speak for themselves and best of all CrossFit is actually FUN!
Putting FUN Back into Your Workouts

CrossFit utilises a wide variety of movements and these a combined in an infinite number of ways to ensure that you will never be bored.
CrossFit is described as the Sport of Fitness. Sports are “played” and that's the mindset CrossFit inspires.
Each workout is recorded by noting time to completion, weights used and how good technique was. This means that each workout completed gives a benchmark to compare future attempts at the same workout against Benchmarks mean that the focus of the program is shifted to performance and with this comes the sense of accomplishment when you can see that you personal athletic development is progressing.
CrossFit inspires you to compete with yourself, to be better and to keep on striving...
“Sounds pretty intense – is it suitable for me?”

Definitely.
CrossFit is suitable for all. The needs of elite level athletes and the rest of us (yes even if you think you're too weak, to old, or too tired) differ by degree, not by kind.
What CrossFit provides, we all need. What we do is scale the intensity and loadings of the workouts to each person. This means that an Olympic athlete and an old lady can do the same workout, but at different levels.
