what our clients say...
"As a competitive martial artist (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), I wanted to become fitter and stronger in preparation for tournaments. Crossfit has a very good repuation in the martial arts community for developing functional fitness, so on discovering that we had a Crossfit box here in South Devon... I wanted to try it out!
I started weekly training sessions with Chris in summer 2011. In the time since, I have felt a huge improvement in my overall fitness, in particular in my strength, which has helped me to feel both physically and mentally prepared for tournaments. I have also seen improvement in my physique, having become increasingly toned.
What I find particularly reassuring about training at Crossfit Westcountry is that there is a real emphasis on training safely. Techniques are demonstrated with great detail, and Chris always provides plenty of constructive advice and feedback. Training programmes are structured to provide incremental and consistent progression, so you can feel yourself improving every session. I find this really motivating! The workouts are always challenging, but are enjoyable and the results I have achieved so far have exceeded my own expectations.
I have already introduced some of my friends to Crossfit Westcountry and would further recommend it to anyone who- for whatever reason- would like to improve their fitness and health."
Vikki T, BJJ Competitor, FightWork Academy Athlete
"For some years I had been looking to find circuit training in the southwest firstly in Cornwall and later in Totnes following 10 years in East Sussex which I loved. I kind of gave up on the idea and then a friend told me about Crossfit. At first I was unsure about giving it a try at that time, feeling so unfit, I felt that I had a long way to go and would not be up to it! I took the plunge with 1-1 training and after a short while was ready to join the group sessions.
Two years on I have achieved my goal lost body weight gained tone and a new shape that I wish I had achieved years ago! I have overcome many of my negative beliefs that “I won’t be able to do that” or “I don’t want to do that because it is outside my reach”. How wrong have I been proved! I am now setting new goals and objectives for myself with wonderful support and encouragement of Chris and Adam
There are several features I enjoy about training with Crossfit Westcountry:
- Achieving or working towards all round fitness.
- Acceptance of individual capability and old body injuries and the positive input of alternatives to main workouts when needed.
- Maybe most of all the positive regard that we are all held in and how individual assistance is willingly given when needed. Opportunity to be constantly being introduced to new workouts building whole body capability over time rather than always focusing on the same thing.
Other benefits I’ve noticed are:
- Increased confidence and capability
- Opportunity to reach further than originally anticipated
- Team spirit and support of the processes
Anyone willing to step into the zone to get out of their own way and get fitter and gain confidence in own ability at Crossfit you will be encouraged to find ways to gain the all-round fitness you seek. What it takes is personal determination and commitment to achieve goals. Without question I would recommend Crossfit.
CrossFit Westcountry provides a truly unique and special place to work out and get fitter being supported and helped every step of the way in a truly human way

"I started using Crossfit Westcountry to improve my strength and conditioning for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Grappling. I was finding that when training and competing against guys the same size and weight as me, I was nowhere near strong enough, fit enough, or quick enough.
Since I started Crossfit, my strength, conditioning and overall fitness have increased massively. I not only notice this in the gym with increases in lifting, quicker times, better endurance etc, but also when training Brazilian Jiu and grappling - I am much more active, can fight for longer and can apply much more pressure than previously.
CrossFit has also helped me mentally - I feel that I now push myself far harder than I did before, and I set much more ambitious goals for myself.
I love the variation within training CrossFit. Every week we're doing something different, whilst still working towards the same goals. It helps keep things fresh, and stops you from getting bored with certain exercises and routines. I really enjoy seeing the actual results of the hard work you put in. Keeping track of progression in strength and conditioning - and seeing how quickly you can improve over a relatively short space of time.
The atmosphere at the gym is great. Whether you're doing smaller sessions, as a few of us from Fightworx do, or doing the busier open sessions, the atmosphere is just right - lots of fun, but lots of hard work and everyone pushing each other.
CrossFit Westcountry is a great place to train - and when I compare it to other gyms and training i've done over the past 10 or so years - it is without doubt where I've seen the best results, and results that directly correlate to the goals I had in mind when I started. It's a great atmosphere for training, and the variation in workouts stops things getting stale. I've so many friends who over the years who've been to a gym once or twice a week, get given bad advice and then given up within a few months as they get bored and don't see the results they expect. There's no danger of that with CrossFit.
I started CrossFit to improve my strength and conditioning for my other training, but now it's become an integral part of my training in it's own right. It's hard work, yet incredibly rewarding... and great fun."
Andy K, FightWorx Academy BJJ Athlete
"I tried CrossFit in desperation after yet another episode of conventional gym membership with its predictable frustrations: approaching 60, my weight was increasing and my general fitness remained unchanged.
The one-one sessions with Chris provide oversight and care with a professional appraisal of what is required, along with the necessary motivation to do it. I enjoyed the work outs and began to look forward to the variety offered. I found CrossFit sessions personalised and attuned to my specific needs and condition.
The opportunity to then exercise within small group sessions is both affordable and rewarding.
I have been helped to start making significant lifestyle-changes - combining the right exercise with sound nutritional advice.
Patience to be in it for the 'long-haul' requires skilled encouragement and a belief that your needs are understood.
Cross Fit provides all the ingredients required. I would recommend it to anybody wanting results."

"I first became aware of Crossfit through the internet and quickly became interested in their method of training. After discovering the existence of Crossfit Westcountry, I was keen to give it a go.
Coming from a background in martial arts and running, with the interest of joining the armed forces, I thought Crossfit would be a great way of developing my fitness in all aspects. And sure enough it did, it exposed some serious holes in my physical capabilities which Chris was quick to pick up on and help me to progress. I also noticed an overall change in my body composition, as well increasing my performance whether on the mat doing judo or in the 800 metres.
Overall I think coming to Crossfit Westcountry is a great experience, both in terms of the training offered and the atmosphere which is friendly and encouraging."
